Why My Wealthy Father Jumped Off That Mansion Balcony Today
The Bright Morning at Sterling Manor
The morning sun shone brightly over the huge grounds of Sterling Manor. The grass was trimmed perfectly, and the big blue pool sparkled under the warm light. From the outside, anyone driving past the front gates would think our family had everything. My father, Richard, was a successful businessman who owned a growing company. He bought this place three years ago after he married my stepmother, Evelyn. My little sister, Maya, was only seven years old and spent her days chasing butterflies near the flower gardens.
I was twelve years old, old enough to notice things that adults thought kids missed. Ever since Evelyn moved in with us, the house felt different. She always wore expensive silk dresses and talked about our family inheritance. She was constantly asking my father about his life insurance policy and who owned the estate. My father loved her deeply, so he never saw any danger in her questions. He just thought she wanted to secure our family future. But I saw the way she looked at my sister and me when Dad was not watching. Her smiles vanished the second Dad turned his back.
That morning, Dad was getting ready for a huge meeting with his corporate lawyers. He was planning to set up a permanent trust fund for Maya and me. The paperwork was sitting right on his polished wooden desk in the home office. It was meant to make sure that our trust fund was completely protected, no matter what happened in the future. Evelyn had been pacing in the hallway outside his office all morning. She looked angry every time the lawyer turned another page of the legal documents.
Evelyn: Are you sure you want to lock all those assets away today, Richard?
Richard: It is the smartest choice for my children, Evelyn.
Evelyn: But what if we need liquid cash for investments later?
Richard: The kids come first. That will never change.
Evelyn forced a quick smile, but her eyes looked ice cold. She turned around and walked down the long hall toward the second-floor balcony. I was sitting on the floor near the living room stairs, playing with my action figures. Maya ran past me holding her favorite stuffed bunny, laughing softly.
Maya: Leo, come upstairs and play hide and seek with me!
Leo: Okay, Maya. Just do not go near the upper deck.
Maya: I want to look at the birds from the high ledge!
Leo: Wait for me, Maya! Stop!
I stood up right away and ran after her. Maya was fast for a seven-year-old. She bounded up the grand staircase toward the sunlit balcony doors. The balcony sat high above the back patio, overlooking the deep end of the swimming pool. The heavy stone balustrade was usually secured by a strong steel safety latch so kids could not open the gate. But as I reached the top of the stairs, I saw that the safety gate was swinging open in the soft breeze. Evelyn was standing near the doorway, holding a glass of iced tea, watching Maya run straight toward the edge.
