Three weeks later, the grand hallway of the county courthouse was bustling with lawyers and reporters. High glass windows let in bright morning sunlight, illuminating the marble floors. Evelyn arrived surrounded by three expensive corporate lawyers in dark suits. She wore a black designer dress and high gold jewelry, looking down her nose at everyone who walked past. Mark walked beside her, wearing a grey suit, looking nervous for the first time in his life.

Clara and David sat at the plaintiff table alongside Mr. Harrison. Little Lily was staying safely at home with Sarah. Evelyn walked past their table and leaned down slightly, speaking in a harsh whisper that only Clara could hear.

Evelyn: You are destroying this family, Clara. You will end up with nothing after today.

Clara: I already have everything I care about, Evelyn. You are the one about to lose.

Evelyn: My legal team will destroy your silly little audio recording in two minutes!

David: Leave my wife alone, Mom. Go sit at your table.

Evelyn scoffed loudly and took her seat across the courtroom aisle. The judge entered the room, a stern woman with sharp grey eyes named Judge Miller. She called the courtroom to order and immediately asked both legal teams to present their evidence regarding the protective order and the child abuse charges against Mark.

Evelyn's lead lawyer stood up smoothly, adjusting his expensive tie. He argued that Mark was merely a caring uncle trying to protect himself from a sudden toddler movement. He claimed Clara was an unstable mother seeking money from the wealthy family trust fund. He spoke for ten minutes, trying to make Clara look like a liar who made up the whole story for financial gain.

When it was Mr. Harrison's turn, he stood up calmly without any flashy gestures. He placed a small digital recorder on the podium and played the main audio track through the courtroom speakers. Mark's dismissive voice echoed loudly across the high ceiling.

Mark (on recording): She needed a lesson. Someone has to teach her manners.

Mr. Harrison then submitted the three high-resolution photographs taken right after the incident, along with the official certified medical report from the doctor. Judge Miller looked at the red handprint mark on the child's cheek in the photos, her face growing colder with every second.

Judge Miller: Mr. Vance, is that your voice on the recording admitting you struck a two-year-old child?

Mark: I... I didn't mean to hurt her, Your Honor! She was grabbing my drink!

Judge Miller: A two-year-old girl poses no physical threat to a grown man, sir. Your behavior is completely unacceptable under the law.

Evelyn stood up from her seat without permission, her face red with frustration and pride.

Evelyn: Your Honor, this is a private family matter! I demand you dismiss these ridiculous claims!

Judge Miller: Sit down immediately, ma'am, or I will hold you in contempt of court!

Evelyn slowly sat down, her hands shaking with rage. For the first time in her life, her wealth and high status could not control the room or buy her way out of trouble. The judge cleared her throat and began reading her official rulings from the bench.
