The Mark On Her Cheek

The bright sun hit the grassy backyard of the big suburban home. White paint shone on the high walls, and a large USA flag sat in a frame near the glass doors. It was supposed to be a happy summer afternoon for the whole family. Clara adjusted her little girl in her arms as laughter came from the patio. Her toddler, Lily, held a blue plastic cup and giggled softly. Clara smiled down at her small daughter, feeling thankful for a calm afternoon.

Clara walked over to the food table to grab a napkin for Lily. Her mother-in-law, Evelyn, stood nearby wearing a crisp beige dress. Evelyn always looked down on Clara because Clara came from a plain working family. Evelyn spent most of her time talking about her family fortune and her beloved son Mark. Mark stood near the cooler holding a red soda can. He was thirty years old, but his mother treated him like a young king who could do no wrong.

Clara turned her back for just five seconds to grab a paper plate. Suddenly, a loud slap rang across the wooden patio. The sound was sharp and hit the quiet air like a whip. A second later, Lily let out a painful scream that made Clara's heart stop cold. Clara dropped her plate and spun around immediately. Lily was sitting on the hard oak floor near the open sliding door, holding her right cheek. Tears pooled in the child's big brown eyes as she sobbed helplessly.

Clara dropped to her knees instantly and pulled Lily into her arms. She moved her daughter's tiny hand away from her face to look. A bright red handprint was rising fast on the toddler's pale skin. Mark stood over the child, holding his soda can, looking down with a harsh glare. Clara felt a hot burst of rage rush through her entire body. She stood up, holding Lily tightly against her pounding chest.

Clara: What did you just do to my daughter?

Mark: She tried to grab my soda can. She needs to learn respect.

Clara: She is two years old! You hit a toddler in the face?

Mark: I gave her a small tap on the cheek. Stop being dramatic.

Evelyn rushed over from the patio table, her golden jewelry jingling loudly. But instead of checking on the crying child, she stepped between Clara and Mark. Evelyn put her hands on her hips and glared directly at Clara with anger.

Evelyn: Stop making a scene! You are ruining the party over nothing!

Clara: He struck my child! I am leaving!

Mark: She needed a lesson. Someone has to teach her manners.

Clara felt tears of shock welling in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of these cold people. The other party guests were staring from the lawn, but nobody moved to help. Mark smirked dismissively and took a sip from his red soda can like nothing happened. Clara turned her back on them and walked straight through the sliding glass door toward the driveway.

Evelyn followed close behind her, her heavy heels clicking loudly on the hard floor. Evelyn was yelling loudly, telling Clara that she was foolish and ungrateful. Clara ignored her completely and hurried outside to her silver SUV. Her hands were trembling violently as she opened the back door. She carefully placed crying little Lily into her child car seat and strapped the seatbelt buckle safely. The buckle clicked into place, giving Clara a small moment of focus.

Clara pulled out her smartphone with a cold, resolute look on her face. She held the phone close to her lips and pressed the audio recording button. Outside the window, Mark and Evelyn were still yelling insults at her through the glass. Clara spoke clearly into the microphone so the audio would capture everything happening around her.

Clara: Say whatever you want. I am saving every single word.

She hit save on the voice file, locked her car doors, and drove away from the house as fast as she safely could. She did not know what would happen next, but she knew one thing for sure. She would never let those cruel people hurt her child ever again.
