Chapter 5 of 6
When A Husband Stood Up To His Cruel Mother
Standing Up To Power
The bright high-key morning daylight flooded through the wide kitchen window glass.
Tommy started crying softly from his high chair, startled by the raised voices.
Sarah picked up her toddler immediately and held him close against her sweater.
Evelyn's face twisted with intense anger as she stepped closer to the island counter.
Evelyn: You don't get to make that decision in my house!
Mark took another firm step forward under the frame of the USA flag painting.
Mark: I'm not letting this happen anymore!
Sarah wiped a tear from her cheek while holding Tommy tight against her shoulder.
Sarah: Can we please not do this today?
Evelyn: You have ruined my son's loyalty with your constant complaining, Sarah!
Mark looked directly into his mother's eyes with absolute determination and complete strength.
Mark: I am not staying in this house another minute!
He turned around quickly and grabbed the two remaining travel bags from the bench.
Evelyn gasped in loud shock as she realized he was truly leaving her behind.
Evelyn: Son, wait! You can't leave me alone in this house!
Mark did not hesitate or slow down his steady steps toward the front door.
He opened the heavy oak entrance door and stepped out onto the sunlit porch.
Sarah followed right behind him with Tommy held safely in her warm arms.
Evelyn stood frozen beside the marble kitchen island as the cold breeze entered.
She watched her only son guide his young family down the front concrete steps.
The quiet oak hallway seemed larger and emptier than it had ever been before.
Mark placed the heavy bags into the trunk of their silver family sedan car.
He opened the passenger door for Sarah and made sure Tommy was secured.
He looked back at the large brick house one last time before getting inside.
The heavy weight he had carried for years seemed to lift off his chest.
He started the car engine and drove down the quiet suburban residential street.
They were finally driving toward true independence and a fresh new family start.
