Chapter 4 of 6
When A Husband Stood Up To His Cruel Mother
Breaking The Silent Rules
Breakfast the next morning was filled with an icy, unbearable silence in the kitchen.
Evelyn set down breakfast plates on the island counter with loud, dramatic thuds.
Tommy sat in his high chair babbling happily while eating sweet sliced bananas.
Sarah packed a small diaper bag near the back door without making any noise.
Mark was upstairs packing two large navy blue suitcases in their primary bedroom suite.
Evelyn marched over to the kitchen sink and turned on the water stream loudly.
Evelyn: You think you can just turn my son against his own mother?
Sarah stopped packing the baby bag and turned around to look at Evelyn.
Sarah: Mark deserves the truth about his life and his hard-earned financial future.
Evelyn: You are ungrateful for everything I have provided for you two here!
Sarah took a deep breath and kept her voice soft and balanced for Tommy.
Sarah: We are grateful for the roof, but trust matters far more than shelter.
Evelyn slammed her hands down onto the smooth marble counter near the sink.
Evelyn: You will not strip away my authority inside my own personal house!
Mark walked down the hardwood staircase carrying two heavily packed canvas bags.
He set the bags near the front entryway beneath the framed USA flag painting.
His face was grim, but his eyes were clearer than Sarah had ever seen them.
Mark: I called an attorney this morning to review the full estate accounting records.
Evelyn turned around quickly, her eyes wide with total panic and sharp disbelief.
Evelyn: You are taking legal action against your own loving mother now, Mark?
Mark: I am taking control of my own family's financial security today, Mom.
Evelyn: You would fail out there in the world without my guidance and structure!
Mark stood tall near his wife and wrapped his arm around her slim shoulders.
Mark: We are going to build our own life on our own terms now.
Evelyn pointed her finger at Sarah with rising fury in her trembling voice.
Evelyn: She forced you into making this terrible mistake against your own family!
Mark stepped forward and placed himself firmly between his mother and his wife.
Mark: Do not speak to my wife with that disrespect ever again, Mom!
