Chapter 2 of 6
My Groom Stole My Heirloom Right Before Our Wedding
An Uninvited Guest Arrives
The ballroom doors suddenly creaked open, cutting through the warm murmur of the room. Heavy leather shoes clicked sharply against the hardwood oak floor, marching with direct purpose toward the center of the dance floor. A tall, middle-aged man wearing a dark trench coat pulled back his lapel to reveal a gleaming gold police badge hanging from his belt. His face was stern, showing no hesitation as he ignored the confused stares of high-society guests.
Detective Walsh: Stop the dance, right now!
The brass band stumbled over their notes before falling completely silent, leaving a ringing hush across the entire estate. Guests froze with their glasses halfway to their mouths, turning their heads toward the bold intruder interrupting the high-profile event. Clara pulled back from Julian, her eyes wide with total confusion as she smoothed down her silk gown.
Clara: Sir, what is going on here? This is a private family event.
Detective Walsh: I am Detective Walsh, city police department, and I am here on official business.
Julian: You are trespassing on private property, officer. Leave before I call the commissioner.
Detective Walsh: Go ahead and call him, Mr. Vance. He signed the warrant himself twenty minutes ago.
Julian's posture stiffened immediately, though he managed to force a cool, professional smile onto his face. He took a small step sideways, subtly positioning Clara between himself and the approaching detective. The guests began whispering loudly, their quiet chatter filling the tense silence like a swarm of angry bees. Clara reached out to touch Julian's sleeve, feeling his muscles locked as tight as iron wire beneath the soft velvet.
Clara: Julian, do you know this man? What warrant is he talking about?
Julian: I have no idea who he is, sweetheart. It is clearly a massive misunderstanding.
Detective Walsh: Step away from the lady, Mr. Vance. Do not make this any worse than it already is.
Julian made a sudden, sharp motion toward the side exit leading out to the sunlit gardens, trying to slip past the outer ring of shocked onlookers. But Detective Walsh was far too quick for the smooth-talking groom. The detective executed a firm, practiced grab on Julian's forearm, twisting his arm back and halting his sudden escape attempt instantly. Julian gasped in frustration, struggling against the iron grip of the veteran officer.
Detective Walsh: You are under arrest for grand larceny and wire fraud.
Julian: Get your filthy hands off me! You have the wrong man!
Clara: Please, there has to be a mistake! Julian would never do anything illegal!
Detective Walsh: Save your tears for now, ma'am. You need to see what your fiancé has been hiding from you.
The crowd gasped as the detective shoved Julian back toward the center of the floor, securing his wrist in a firm lock. The bright daylight from the tall windows illuminated the sharp contrast between the elegant venue and the harsh reality of an arrest unfolding in real time. Clara stood frozen in place, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird as she watched her dream wedding crumble before her eyes.
