Chapter 4 of 5

My Evil Stepmother Forced My Pregnant Wife Onto Her Knees

Uncovering the Secret

With Margarethe finally gone, Mark rushed back to the living room, where Sarah was sitting on the couch, wiping the tears and food from her face with a soft cloth. Mark knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his and kissing her cold knuckles gently.

Mark: Are you okay, Sarah? Does anything hurt? Should we go to the hospital right now?

Sarah: The baby is kicking, Mark... I think we are okay, but I was so scared. She was like a completely different person today.

Mark: She knows her time is up. The lawyer confirmed that she has been stealing money from my father's trust fund for years.

Sarah: How much did she take?

Mark: Millions of dollars, Sarah. She used forged signatures to move funds into offshore accounts. She came here today because she wanted to intimidate you into signing documents that would cover up her theft.

Sarah gasped, covering her mouth with her hand as the full reality of Margarethe's desperate scheme finally dawned on her. The abuse on the floor had not just been an outburst of cruel temper; it had been a calculated attempt to break Sarah's spirit and force her into signing legal waivers while Mark was away from home.

Sarah: Mark, when she grabbed my arm, her purse spilled over onto the floor. Look under the coffee table.

Mark looked down and spotted a thick, yellow legal envelope that had slid under the bottom shelf of the table during the struggle. He reached underneath and pulled the envelope out, unwrapping the string clasp to inspect the contents inside.

Inside the envelope were several pages of bank statements, along with a certified copy of his late father's final, updated will. Mark turned to the last page and felt his jaw tighten in total shock. Attached to the back of the document was a private investigator's report dated just two weeks before his father's sudden death three years ago.

Mark: Look at this, Sarah. My father knew.

Sarah: Knew what?

Mark: He discovered that Margarethe was stealing from the company back then. He had already drafted an amendment to his will, cutting her off completely from the estate and leaving everything to us.

Sarah: Then why did she get half of the estate when he passed away?

Mark: Because she hid this document! She presented an older version of the will to the probate court before anyone could search my father's personal safe!

Mark turned the pages rapidly, finding an official notarized signature from his father, fully verified and stamped by a local law firm. Margarethe had kept the original document hidden in her private safe, bringing it with her today to destroy it alongside the fake waivers she wanted Sarah to sign.

Mark: She made a massive mistake bringing this into our house. This single envelope contains all the proof the district attorney needs to send her to prison for fraud, grand larceny, and probate court perjury.

Sarah: Call the police right now, Mark. Do not give her another minute to fix her mistakes or leave the country.

Mark pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and dialed the local police station immediately. As the line rang, he took Sarah's hand and held it tight, feeling a deep sense of relief wash over him. The long years of intimidation, fear, and emotional abuse were finally coming to an end, crushed under the weight of the truth.
