Chapter 1 of 5
My Dad Hidden Secret Floorboard Box Ruined His Wedding Day
The Boy With The Briefcase
The grand country club hall was filled with soft music and warm golden light from massive crystal chandeliers hanging overhead. Wealthy guests dressed in custom silk suits and designer gowns sat around round tables covered in clean white linen. Waiters moved silently between the tables, carrying silver trays filled with expensive champagne glasses and plates of gourmet food. Everyone in the room was laughing, smiling, and talking about the incredible career of Mark Vance, the famous real estate tycoon. Mark was sitting at the head table, wearing a dark fitted tuxedo with a diamond lapel pin that caught the ambient light. Beside him sat Clara Bennett, his radiant young bride, wearing an intricate white lace gown with a long silk train.
Mark lifted his crystal glass to toast his new wife, flashing a perfect salesman smile toward his rich business partners. But near the back entrance of the ballroom, ten-year-old Leo stepped onto the polished oak floorboards without making a single sound. Leo wore a dark wool suit that was slightly too big around his narrow shoulders, making him look tiny among the tall adults. His small fingers gripped the leather handle of a dusty black metal briefcase that dragged slightly against his formal trousers as he walked. Leo did not look at the floral arrangements, the multi-tiered cake, or the dozens of wealthy people watching him with rising curiosity. His eyes stayed locked entirely on Mark Vance, his biological father, who had spent years acting as if Leo did not exist.
As Leo walked closer to the head table, the quiet chatter in the massive ballroom slowly faded into an awkward silence. Several guests turned in their seats, whispering to each other while wondering why a little boy was carrying heavy luggage into a reception. Clara noticed the young boy first, her smile fading as she leaned closer toward her new husband to gently tap his arm. Mark turned his head with a mild frown, expecting a young flower boy or a waiter seeking permission to clear empty dinner plates. Instead, Mark saw his own son standing right beside his chair, clutching the worn black briefcase firmly with both freckled hands. Mark leaned down closer to the boy, his voice turning harsh and low while his jaw clenched tightly with sudden anger.
Mark: What are you doing here, Leo?
Leo: I brought you something, Dad.
Mark: Go sit down. Now!
Leo: You left it beneath your office floorboards.
Mark rigidified completely, his face turning pale while his hand trembled against the edge of the smooth white tablecloth. The surrounding guests gasped quietly, senseing the sudden wave of panic radiating from the groom as he stared at the dusty case. Mark grabbed the handle of the briefcase, frantically trying to pull it away from the little boy before anyone could see. But Leo held his ground, refusing to let go until the double brass latches snapped open with a sharp metallic click. Mark lifted the heavy lid just an inch, peering inside before quickly slamming it closed as cold sweat broke out across his forehead.
Mark: No! That was destroyed!
Leo: You lied to the judge, Dad.
Clara: Mark, what is inside that case?
Mark did not answer his bride; his eyes were wide with total terror as he looked around the silent, filled room. An elderly guest in a dark tuxedo stood up abruptly from his front row chair, gasping aloud in complete shock at the sight. The entire audience realized that this was not a childish prank, but the sudden reveal of a terrible family crime.
