Chapter 1 of 6
A Returning Soldier Uncovers Her Family Secret At Home
The Unannounced Return Home
Captain Sarah Miller pulled her heavy military duffel bag over her right shoulder.
She walked up the crisp concrete path of her suburban Dallas neighborhood.
The late afternoon sun cast a warm golden light across the manicured green lawn.
Sarah had been away on overseas deployment for eight long grueling months.
Every single night spent abroad was filled with thoughts of her five year old daughter Lily.
She adjusted the collar of her camouflage uniform before stepping onto the front porch.
A decorative American flag hung proudly beside the grand mahogany front entrance.
Sarah smiled softly as she remembered hanging that exact picture frame two years ago.
She reached into her deep pocket to find her metallic house key ring.
Before her key touched the brass lock, she heard sudden harsh voices inside.
A sharp feminine scream bounced loudly off the tall polished drywall.
Stepmother: Be quiet right now and stop your endless whining!
Sarah froze instantly as her military instincts took total control of her body.
She turned the brass handle quickly and pushed the front door straight open.
The bright foyer revealed her former husband Mark standing near the living room door.
Beside him stood his new wife Evelyn holding a tall red glass of wine.
Little Lily stood cowering near the coat rack in her red holiday pajamas.
The young girl clutched a plush Santa teddy bear tightly against her small chest.
Little Girl: Mommy, please don't come inside!
Sarah dropped her heavy green canvas bag onto the hardwood floor with a thud.
Her heart sank rapidly into her stomach at the sound of her daughter's panic.
Mother: Lily, baby, what is happening in this house right now?
Evelyn took a slow sip from her glass and smiled with icy indifference.
Mark shifted his posture uncomfortably while staring down at his dark smartphone screen.
Stepmother: She is just throwing an exaggerated temper tantrum like usual, Sarah.
Sarah ignored Evelyn completely and rushed straight to her daughter's side.
She knelt down on the cold polished floor to reach Lily's eye level.
Tears streamed continuously down the young child's red flushed cheeks.
Mother: I am right here now, my sweet baby girl.
Sarah gently took hold of Lily's left arm to offer comfort.
Lily winced instantly and pulled her small arm back toward her body.
Sarah noticed a dark purple mark peeking out from under the pajama sleeve.
She pulled back the cloth carefully to inspect the swelling skin tissue.
Mother: What happened to your wrist, sweetheart?
Stepmother: She fell at preschool during recess earlier this afternoon.
Evelyn answered instantly without making any direct eye contact with Sarah.
Mark stepped forward slowly while tapping on his sleek black phone display.
Father: Kids get bumps and scrapes all the time at that age, Sarah.
Sarah narrowed her eyes tightly as she examined the finger-shaped mark closely.
The dark purple discoloration clearly looked like an aggressive human grip.
Her inner protective motherly rage began to burn deep inside her chest.
Mother: Did someone scare you or hurt you, Lily?
Lily trembled violently while squeezing her plush Santa bear closer to her chin.
She looked up at her father with wide terrified brown eyes.
Mark took another authoritative step forward toward his former wife and child.
He pulled a thick stack of white legal papers from his back pocket.
Father: We have urgent business to finish, so sign everything tonight.
Sarah stood up slowly, keeping her body positioned firmly between Mark and Lily.
The atmosphere inside the bright foyer turned extremely tense and cold.
