Chapter 2 of 5
A Cruel Stepmother Rips A Gold Necklace From An Orphan
The Document On Marble
The leather envelope lay on the bright stone floor, partially open at the top. Lily reached out her hand to grab it back, but she was trembling too hard from the pain and fear. The guests in the ballroom began to whisper among themselves, wondering why Victoria was treating her late husband's daughter with such extreme cruelty. Yet no one stepped forward to help the poor girl, because Victoria controlled all the family bank accounts and business contracts now. No one wanted to lose their invitation to the high-society events.
However, standing near the archway was Julian, the tall brother of Lily's late father. He had just returned from a long business trip overseas after hearing about the court battles over the family money. Julian wore a dark tailored tuxedo and walked with a steady, quiet confidence. He had always suspected that Victoria was up to something dishonest ever since his brother passed away so suddenly. When he heard the sound of the chain snapping, he pushed his way through the dense crowd of guests instantly.
Julian: What is going on here? Why is Lily on the floor?
Victoria: Keep out of this, Julian. I am just teaching this disobedient child a quick lesson about respect.
Julian: You don't lay a hand on my niece. Not ever.
Julian stepped between Victoria and the small girl on the floor. He leaned down to help Lily up, but his eye caught the dark leather document sitting on the marble surface. The red wax seal carried the official mark of the county probate court along with his brother's unique personal signature. Julian picked up the heavy folder, feeling the old parchment inside. His eyes narrowed as he recognized the high-value legal papers instantly. Victoria had spent the last six months telling the court that no valid paper existed, claiming the whole estate for herself through default rules.
Julian opened the folder carefully, ignoring Victoria's sudden look of deep annoyance. As his eyes read the bold letters at the top of the first page, his face changed from anger to total shock. The seal was fresh, verified by the state's highest legal authority just three days ago before his brother's unexpected passing. The document clearly detailed the distribution of the entire inheritance, the trust fund, the luxury cars, and the mansion itself.
Julian: This is the original will of the estate!
Victoria: That is impossible! That paper is a fake!
Julian: It has the official court seal and his lawyer's verified stamp right here. You knew this existed the whole time!
The crowd went completely silent as Julian held the paper up into the light of the crystal chandelier. Victoria's smug face suddenly drained of all color, turning as white as the marble floor beneath her feet. The comfortable lie she had told the press and the family lawyer for months was falling apart right in front of two hundred people.
