Chapter 3 of 6

When She Dropped Her Suitcase He Had No Idea

The Confrontation In The Foyer

Mark stepped close, his towering height usually enough to intimidate anyone who crossed his path in business or at home. But Sarah did not back away; she stood her ground, her small frame rigid with an authority he had never seen in her before. Outside, the yellow school bus pulled up to the driveway gates, its brakes squealing loudly through the open afternoon air. Sarah knew her kids were stepping off the bus right now, coming home to a nightmare they never deserved to see. She needed to end this immediately before her children stepped through that front entrance.

Mark: You're making a huge mistake, Sarah! Put those bags away right now before you embarrass yourself further!

Sarah: The only mistake I made was trusting a liar like you for ten years!

Mark: I run this house! You don't get to just pack up and walk away with my money!

Sarah: It was never just your money, Mark. We built this life together, and you destroyed it for her!

Mark reached out wildly, grabbing Sarah's right arm with a tight, aggressive grip, trying to physically pull her back toward the living room. The sharp pain shot up her wrist, but it triggered something inside her that had been sleeping for a decade. With lightning speed, Sarah spun her body around, raised her free left hand high into the air, and brought it swinging down with full force across Mark's face. A thunderous slap exploded through the foyer, echoing against the high ceiling like a gunshot.

Mark stumbled back three full steps, his hand flying instantly to his burning red cheek while his eyes bulged out in complete shock. Brenda shrieked in horror from the living room sofa, backing further into the corner as if she were next. Mark stared at Sarah, gasping for air, his face twisting into a terrifying mask of rage and absolute outrage. He had never been struck by anyone in his life, let alone the quiet, gentle woman he had spent years pushing around.

Mark: You crazy witch! You just made the biggest mistake of your life!

Sarah: GO TO HELL, MARK!

Mark: You won't get a single penny from me! I will destroy you in court!

Sarah: Try it. I have the papers from the guest house right here in my bag!

The front door clicked open behind Sarah, and small footsteps trotted eagerly across the welcome mat. Toby and Lily stood in the doorway, their tiny backpacks slung over their shoulders, staring wide-eyed at their father clutching his red face and their mother standing surrounded by heavy suitcases. The tension in the air was so thick even the little children could feel it immediately. Toby looked at his mother's tear-stained face, then down at the big rolling bags sitting by the wall, his lower lip beginning to tremble with confusion and fear.

Toby: MOMMY, ARE WE LEAVING DAD?

Sarah: Yes, baby. Grab your sister's hand and step outside to the car right now.

Mark: Toby, Lily, stay right there! Don't listen to your mother!

Sarah: Don't you dare touch them, Mark! If you step one inch closer, I will call the police right now!

She scooped up her luggage with one hand, grabbed both her children with the other, and pushed them gently through the open front door into the bright daylight. Mark stood frozen in the middle of the grand entrance, his jaw tight, his red cheek throbbing with heat as he watched his family slip right out of his fingers. Sarah pulled the heavy carved wooden door shut behind her, slamming it with a loud boom that sounded like the final chapter of a long, painful book closing forever.
