Chapter 2 of 6
When My Mother In Law Denied My Child Food
Secrets Inside The Family Estate
Sarah packed Lily's small diaper bag in the guest bedroom while her hands shook uncontrollably. The room was cold, filled with expensive antique furniture that had belonged to the family for three generations. David walked into the bedroom quietly, shutting the heavy mahogany door behind him with a soft click. He looked drained, his forehead lined with deep wrinkles of worry as he approached his wife.
David: Sarah, please calm down for a second. We can talk about this like adults.
Sarah: There is nothing left to talk about, David. You let your mother bully our toddler daughter.
David: She is just old-fashioned! You know how strict she is about dinner table manners.
Sarah: She pulled food away from a hungry baby! That is not old-fashioned, David. That is cruel.
David: If we cause a scene and leave now, she will cut us out of the trust fund completely.
The word hung in the air like a heavy cloud. Sarah stopped packing and slowly turned around to look at her husband. She had always known David's family possessed significant wealth, including the grand mansion and vast land holdings in town. But David had always claimed they were living on his income as an accountant, independent from his mother's financial influence. Now, the truth was slipping out of his mouth in a moment of utter desperation.
Sarah: The trust fund? Is that what this is really about?
David: My father left five million dollars in a family trust fund when he passed away four years ago. My mother controls the distribution until I turn thirty-five next year.
Sarah: So you let her insult me and mistreat our child just so you can get a check?
David: It is not just a check, Sarah! It is our daughter's future, her college fund, our home mortgage paid off!
Sarah: Money bought with our self-respect is worth nothing to me.
David stepped closer, reaching out to touch Sarah's arm, but she quickly pulled away from his reach. Outside the bedroom window, rain began to fall against the glass panes with a steady rhythmic beat. The grand mansion, which had once felt impressive and warm to Sarah, now felt like a golden cage designed to control everyone inside it. Margaret had used her late husband's will as a leash to keep David completely under her thumb for years.
David: You don't understand how my mother operates. If we cross her, she will hire the top lawyers in the state to make our lives miserable.
Sarah: Let her try. I am not staying under this roof another minute.
David: If you walk out that door tonight, Sarah, she will make sure I don't get a single penny from the estate.
Sarah: Then you have to choose right now, David. Are you a husband and father, or are you just Margaret's obedient son?
David stood still in the middle of the room, his tongue tied and eyes darting toward the floor. He could not bring himself to give a clear answer, his silence speaking far louder than any words ever could. Sarah picked up the packed bag, zipped it shut with a sharp pull, and rested Lily on her hip. She walked past David without another word, her heart heavy with grief for the marriage she thought she had.
As she walked down the grand winding staircase, Margaret was sitting in the parlor sipping tea from a delicate bone china cup. Margaret did not even turn her head as Sarah walked toward the heavy front door, her posture rigid and unyielding as always.
Margaret: Walk out that door, Sarah, and you leave empty-handed. No house, no support, nothing.
Sarah: I would rather have nothing than live on your bitter charity.
Sarah opened the front door and stepped out into the cool rainy evening, leaving the grand estate far behind her.
