The Silent Tears in the Kitchen

The bright morning sun poured into the large, modern kitchen, hitting the polished hardwood oak floors and sparkling white marble countertops. Outside, the quiet American suburban neighborhood was just waking up, but inside the mansion, sixteen-year-old Chloe was already exhausted. Her back burned with a deep ache because her infant baby brother, Leo, was strapped into a baby carrier attached firmly to her shoulders. Tiny Leo was crying softly, his small hot tears soaking through Chloe's thin shirt while she stood over the sink. Chloe swept a lock of brown hair out of her eyes with her elbow and swallowed hard to stop her own tears from falling into the soapy dishwater. She scrubbed a stack of greasy glass plates as quickly as she could, trying hard not to drop anything onto the gleaming island counter.

Chloe had been doing chores since five o'clock in the morning, long before the sun even came up over the trees. Ever since her biological mother passed away three years ago, the giant house felt cold and empty despite all the high-end furniture and expensive art hanging on the walls. Her father, Richard, was a very busy corporate businessman who spent long hours running his firm in the city. To keep the home running, Richard had remarried a woman named Evelyn a year ago, believing she would be a soft, caring mother to his young children. But behind Richard's back, Evelyn turned into a cold and ruthless woman who treated Chloe and baby Leo like unwanted servants in their own home.

Chloe rubbed her sore shoulder and whispered gentle words to baby Leo, trying to soothe his low whimpers. "It is okay, little buddy," Chloe whispered softly, bouncing gently up and down on her heels as she rinsed a large silver platter. "Big sister is right here. Daddy will be down for breakfast soon, and everything will be alright." But Chloe knew deep down that mornings were always the hardest part of her day. Evelyn expected the kitchen to look like a glossy magazine picture before Richard walked downstairs in his tailored Italian suits. If there was a single water drop on the faucet, Evelyn would yell and threaten to withhold money from Chloe's future college trust fund.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the kitchen swung open with a light creak. Evelyn walked into the room wearing an expensive pink silk robe that rustled softly against the oak floor. She held a crystal fruit bowl in her hands, her sharp eyes scanning the room for any sign of a mistake. Her dark hair was neatly styled, and her face was set in a cold, disgusted sneer as she looked at Chloe standing near the sink. Evelyn stepped closer, her expensive designer slippers clicking loudly against the hard floor, breaking the quiet quiet of the early morning.

Evelyn: Why is that noisy child still crying on your back, Chloe?

Chloe: Leo is hungry, Evelyn. He did not sleep well last night because he had a high fever.

Evelyn: I do not want to hear your pathetic excuses. Clean this counter right now!

Chloe: I am almost finished with the breakfast dishes, I promise.

Evelyn: Almost finished is not good enough in this house! Look at these spots on the counter!

Chloe closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling her heart pound rapidly against her ribs. She kept her head down, desperately squeezing the wet yellow sponge between her trembling fingers. She knew that arguing with Evelyn only made things ten times worse for her and her little brother. Evelyn walked over to the wooden dining table, placing the fruit bowl down with a sharp click before turning back with an icy look in her eyes. Chloe held baby Leo closer to her back, adjusting the cloth strap so the baby felt safe against her warm skin, praying that her father would hurry down the stairs before things got worse.
