Chapter 1 of 6
The Abandoned Suitcase On The Road Held His True Identity
The Unknown Box On The Road
Leo adjusted the worn straps of his thin canvas backpack as he walked down the dusty suburban pavement.
The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly on his face, highlighting the small freckles across his nose.
He had spent most of his young life moving from one temporary home to another without any real answers.
Every neighborhood looked almost identical to him with matching gray sidewalks and faded streetlights.
He kept his eyes focused entirely on the ground to avoid eye contact with passing strangers.
His stomach rumbled quietly because he had skipped breakfast earlier that morning.
A sudden glint of silver zipper metal near the grass caught his immediate attention.
He stopped walking right on the edge of the curb and stared directly at the dark grass.
A heavy black leather suitcase rested neatly under the shadow of a tall oak tree.
It sat perfectly upright as if someone had placed it there with deliberate care just minutes ago.
Leo looked left and right along the quiet suburban avenue to see if anyone was watching.
The nearby houses were completely silent behind their trimmed hedges and manicured lawns.
No cars moved down the street, and no neighbors stood out on their front porches.
He took three hesitant steps toward the abandoned bag and stopped again.
His heart beat faster against his ribs as curious thoughts flooded his mind.
He wondered if someone had simply forgotten their luggage while loading up a personal vehicle.
Or perhaps someone wanted to discard an old unwanted item far away from their own house.
He slowly kneeled down on the hard concrete curb right beside the mysterious dark bag.
The morning dew had not yet fully dried off the top surface of the black fabric.
He reached out one shaking hand toward the heavy metal zipper pull.
The metal felt icy cold against his warm fingertips as he gripped it tightly.
He paused for a long second to listen carefully for any approaching footsteps.
Only the soft whisper of the summer wind through the tree branches filled the stillness.
He pulled the zipper back with a slow and steady motion.
The sharp sound of opening teeth echoed loudly in the silent morning air.
The top lid of the heavy suitcase flopped open to expose the contents inside.
Leo gasped softly and pulled his hands back toward his chest instantly.
He expected to find dirty clothes or useless household junk crammed inside the compartment.
Instead, the entire interior was arranged with incredible precision and obvious care.
A stack of brand new folded clothes sat directly on the left side of the lining.
Right beside the clothes rested a glossy white photo album with no written title.
A crisp white paper envelope sat resting directly on top of the dark leather cover.
Leo stared down at the items as tears began to form behind his tired eyes.
He knew without a doubt that this bag was meant specifically for him to discover today.
