Chapter 1 of 5
A Rich Mother Pushed a Child into the Pool
A Cold Welcome in Dallas
Sarah adjusted the collar of her simple cotton dress as the luxury estate came into view.
The sun washed over the massive Dallas mansion with blinding summer light.
Her four-year-old son Toby held her fingers with a tight grip.
He looked nervously at the towering stone arches of his father's childhood home.
Sarah took a deep breath to calm her racing heart.
She had agreed to this weekend visit only for the sake of her husband Mark.
Mark wanted his widowed mother Evelyn to finally accept his new family.
The iron gates swung open with a low metallic hum.
Mark parked their modest sedan near a shining blue luxury sports car.
He stepped out of the driver side and gave Sarah a warm encouraging smile.
He promised her that his mother would behave herself today.
Sarah wanted to believe him more than anything in the world.
She stepped onto the hot paved driveway and helped Toby out of his seat.
The front doors of the mansion creaked open slowly.
Evelyn stood in the framed doorway wearing a sharp red silk dress.
Her gray hair was pinned back in a tight flawless bun.
She looked down at Sarah with eyes as cold as polished stone.
There was no smile on the older woman's face.
She did not offer a hug or a word of greeting to her grandson.
Instead she crossed her arms and stared at the modest outfit Sarah wore.
Mark walked up the wide stone stairs and gave his mother a brief kiss on the cheek.
He asked if his brother had arrived for the family meeting yet.
Evelyn stated that Richard was already waiting in the main study room inside.
She kept her gaze fixed squarely on Sarah with clear disdain.
She remarked that some people clearly did not understand high class standards.
Sarah kept her chin up and refused to let the harsh words break her spirit.
She reminded Evelyn that they were here only to talk about the family trust fund.
Toby hid behind his mother's skirt and peered out shyly.
Evelyn glanced down at the young boy with a look of pure disgust.
She muttered that blood lines mattered more than paper documents.
Mark turned around and asked his mother to stop making snide remarks.
He wanted this weekend to be peaceful for everyone involved.
Evelyn turned around silently and walked deeper into the cool marbled hallway.
Sarah led Toby inside, feeling the heavy atmosphere press down on her chest.
The estate felt more like a fortress than a loving home.
She knew that money had ruined this family long before she arrived.
Her only goal was to keep her child safe from the toxic games.
They followed Mark into a huge living space that opened to a patio.
Outside, a large crystal pool glittered under the bright Texas sky.
Tall palm trees swayed gently in the warm afternoon breeze.
It looked like paradise, but Sarah felt an uneasy chill down her spine.
She pulled Toby a little closer to her side as they walked.
